My Luckiest Break (a villanelle)

Villanelle completed at Write by the Lake poetry class, June 2016

My Luckiest Break

A Mecca for authors is Write by the Lake.
Walking State Street or sitting at the Terrace is something sublime.
Finding this workshop was my luckiest break.

Daily assignments challenge the brain and are no piece of cake.
Novelists plot, essayists opine and poet’s don’t’ always rhyme.
A Mecca for authors is Write by the Lake.

Critique is supportive and kind and over the coals no one is raked.
Changing genres or point of view is never a crime.
Finding this workshop was my luckiest break.

Racing to classes, public readings and seminars, how much can I take!
But the harder we work, the higher we climb.
A Mecca for authors is Write by the Lake.

Fully develop that quirky character, you’ll never forsake.
That elusive last stanza is done just in time.
Finding this workshop was my luckiest break.

Once the day’s toil is over, have a drink, for Pete’s sake.
That brandy Manhattan seems perfectly prime.
A Mecca for authors is Write by the Lake.
Finding this workshop was my luckiest break.

Good Night ( a golden shovel)

Exercise of the golden shovel done during Write by the Lake poetry class June 2016.

Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night
Dylan Thomas

DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THAT GOOD NIGHT

Though I try this and I try that, and get so tired from striving, no matter what I DO

Being meek or being bold, being insightful and so caring, it turns out to be NOT

The necessary element that’s missing, that mysterious component that will help me GO

To the next level to prove that I am submissive, sweet and GENTLE

To indicate that I’m exactly what you need.  Instead what I run INTO

Is a brick wall, an iron curtain and completely the opposite of THAT

Which will make you smile and say that I am GOOD.

To hell with date NIGHT.
